RIP Joan Rivers a Forever Joan Ranger

Having met so many people in the industry over the years, means that I’m not generally impressed by many people. Thanks to one of the best singers I know, Michelle Penn, I’ve met several Hollywood celebrities and even work with several on an ongoing basis because of a friendship that began on twitter with a love of America’s Armed Forces. Joan Rivers was inevitably one of the funniest people I’ve ever met in my life. What is more impressive is the work ethic that this lady had. She was working until she passed and her legacy will live on.

I remember the first time I went to watch Fashion Police in 2011. It was a special edition for the end of the year. I didn’t know who was going to be dubbed a fashole, but I was beyond excited. I returned several times over the years and Joan would give you these little badges. My wasn’t handed to me in the amazing bedazzled Fashion Police container, but you know what, he cares. I was an official Joan Ranger and I could arrest Fasholes on the spot. (She was great.)

Daughter Melissa Rivers produces the show. While at the show we started talking about homework projects for our sons. Seriously, they know damn good and well that these kids don’t build these models and do the projects. Oh no, the parents do. She was passing out candy too, because the show is filmed early in the morning which means people need to wake up. Our lives were threatened if we threw trash on the floor. Joan made a joke about Kristen Stewart and I laughed so hard I was crying. I’m pretty sure they had to pause filming just so I could regain composure.  “The best one-trick-pony is Kristen Stewart, who got a whole career by being able to juggle a director’s balls.” Joan Rivers I died, I lost it, I was laughing hysterically. Some members of the audience were shocked she said it, but this is Joan and she speaks her mind always.

Joan would joke about how the above badges were cheap and made in China. I remember her talking about Emma Watson and how she landed one role at 8 and she’s set for life and “Can’t she just be a normal teenager and punish her parents by getting knocked up?”  Honestly, I couldn’t put all of the jokes that Joan made in between cuts in here. The funniest thing was Joan refusing to do a retake because she was smart enough to know that the initial laughter from the audience couldn’t be replicated again. But, she was sly. She would pretend she didn’t hear you and ignore you. Melissa and Joan would argue back and forth and it was hysterical. She will forever be missed not just for her brass comedy but for her philanthropy. She was extremely supportive of our military and of homosexuals. In fact, she wanted the gay men and women up front at the show. Most importantly she was a mother and grandmother and a great one at that. Cooper even came onto the set while they were filming once and she definitely loved her daughter and grandson.

My prayers are with Melissa and Cooper and I hope that the laughter Joan brought to everyone daily returns soon, the way she would have wanted it to. Joan often quoted Sally Marr, “I ain’t afraid of death.” Joan said, “I’m in show business. I died a million times.” She was a brazen comedian that had no problems busting the limits and knew no such thing as too soon. She believed great comedy was somewhere between boring left field and going to far. Joan might have thought nothing was sacred, but believe me, that didn’t mean she didn’t care. She was a very caring and classy lady. Rest in Peace Joan Rivers, heaven just gained a limitless supply of humor.

I live between our Nation's Capital and North Carolina, love daisies, giraffes, purple, polka dots, Diet Mountain Dew, Doritos, and guns. Not necessarily in that order. I’m Catholic, a wife & a mother. I know that I’m very unoriginal and fit most cliches. I won’t try to deny it if you ask me. Ill-advised, indiscreet, and injudicious individuals infuriate I.
