Designing with the Sea, It Calls Me!

Designing with the sea, it calls me! I’m drawn to the sea to design. Growing up on the water, the Metedeonk River, was truly one of my favorite childhood memories. We swam, went fishing, crabbing, water skiing, jet skiing, sailing, and most importantly did it with 6  siblings by my side.

Life was pretty amazing and I knew that this blessing in my life was due to the hard work and dedication of my parents. I also knew that it was no easy task, as my Mom was Mom, formally a 1st grade teacher, and Dad was and Attorney at his own Law Firm. Long hours working and raising 7 kids must have been exhausting, but they did it with a smile and took time to teach us , show us  how blessed we were to live this life. Every weekend Dad gave Mom some alone time ( she always had an infant at home it seemed , so that alone time meant with just one). Dad would take us all to the beach which was only a mile away. We ran, climbed the jetty, searched for shells, treasures, sea glass, anything to keep us busy to give Mom that time she needed to exhale.

This time meant something so much more to me, it began my love of not only the ocean, but the gifts the ocean gave. Blue sea glass was a unique find and we would have contests to see who would find the blue piece, elusive as it was, every once in a while one of us would find this treasure. I was fascinated. I was “hooked”, I was in love with this life.

Years past, school and years spent as a kindergarten teacher and Mom to my own two boys took precedence. But the ocean was always a part  of our daily trips to find something to do, a place to have fun and be free. We spent hours each week doing the same thing my Dad did with us growing up. My love of collecting sea glass continued but raising my sons was paramount and collecting was just a hobby.

Fast forward to 2014. Boys now young men, I took these beach walks by myself and found that this “hobby” of collecting sea glass could be so much more and so began my little venture, C-Glass Designs by Ellen. I designed bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. I was having fun while doing what I loved since I was a little girl. I approached a few shops and they picked up my designs to consign with them. I was in business. C-Glass Designs was born and part of me was born again into this favorite past time of designing with sea glass.

Some custom designs.

Year 2017 I started to design home accents, sea glass mobiles and new jewelry designs. Some jewelry incorporated beads and charms as well, these started as custom orders, and took off from there.

Searching for sea glass!

I do what I love and love what I do, and I do both. Mom, small business owner, designer and a happy woman. I’m so glad I grew up with such a love of the beach, ocean and the water around us. I’m so glad I decided to take this leap of faith and do what makes me happy, I’m so glad that my designs inspire others and they like what they see.

It’s been fun, and meditative and perfect for my lifestyle.

Thank you to my parents that instilled my love of the water that surrounds our little world here in New Jersey. Thank you to my husband for helping me see what I love and encouraging me to do what makes me happy. Thanks to my boys that always help me remember that finding the first piece of blue sea glass means getting ice cream!

You can find some of my designs online at www.C-GlassDesigns.com, ETSY shop Disney4shore Jewelry, and on Facebook at  C-Glass Designs by ellen.

I hope you too find blue…..

I live between our Nation's Capital and North Carolina, love daisies, giraffes, purple, polka dots, Diet Mountain Dew, Doritos, and guns. Not necessarily in that order. I know that I’m very unoriginal and fit most cliches. I won’t try to deny it if you ask me. Ill-advised, indiscreet, and injudicious individuals infuriate I.
