I would rather fold an easy origami lily than listen to another person tell me how awesome it is to work in the yard in the spring and summer.  Whenever the early spring hits, I have to endure hearing people tell me how excited they are to go get out in the yard and plant things.  I just don’t get it.  I realize that gardening is some people’s Prozac.  And for them I am glad they found a Prozac that doesn’t cost as much, only has beautiful side effects and overall is so much better for society than another psychopharmaceutical  drug.  But I can’t stand gardening.  For me folding an origami lily is infinately better than gardening for 5 major reason.  My hatred of gardening helps me understand why the milllenial generation has such a love of succulents –they are pretty low maintenance. (Scroll to the bottom for the video tutorial)

One sheet of paper costs about 2 cents.  The last flower bed I put in cost me in water, plants, amended soil and plant food and ran me at least $40. And that doesn’t even accoutn for my labor, putting up with growing family help or the original bed costs of edging, grass removal etc.   You can make a lot of paper lilies for $40

This easy origami lily is 5 minutes tops to make.  The dumb flower bed has to be watered ever, single, solitary day.  Don’t forget to feed the plants every month too.  And increase that watering, if a heat wave hits.  Oh and those weeds don’t pull themselves either.  So set aside time every other day for that.  (Trust me weekly weeding didn’t support life of anything but weeds in my backyard).

Flowers come in lots of colors and it makes them really beautiful.  But origami flowers come in book paper, patterned, variegated, black, name the pattern and you can make an origami lilly from it.  So that even beats our the wide variety of natural flowers (a tough thing to do)

4. Attention not needed

If I forget to hire a kid to care for my flower bed while I leave on summer vacation they totally die.  But origami lily will remain in bloom every day while I am gone.  And better yet, I can even store them in a dark closet and they will come out looking the same.

That doesn’t require a composting pile.  I am all for recycling, but throw the paper in a bin and it gets taken.  So I am good with that, it’s easy.  I tried composting once, it sucks as much as gardening to me.  Actually it sucks more, because I had to water my compost bin as the scraps dried out in the outdoors in my desert homeland.  So wasted water and got nothing but dirt from it.  Oddly that was the same result in my vegetable garden, so what’s the point.

So join me in folding an easy origami lily instead of planting flowers this spring.
