Blue Na'vi Mug Cake Recipe | Fave Mom

When I was in the 5th grade the Pepsi vs. Coke taste test battles were in full swing.  And I became obsessed with the idea of taste testing food.  So obsessed that my next science fair project involved people eating foods blindly then guessing what they ate. (I did not advance with this project, but enjoyed doing it).   While doing my research–I actually was at library looking for taste test documentation in those old-time periodical guides.– I came across an article about how blue foods were tested on children to determine if they would eat them.  Specifically, blue potatoes.  Not purple potatoes and nothing natural.  Dyed with food coloring blue potatoes.  At that time, the mid 80s, this test proved that children do not like food in varying colors.   Have times changed or what? Kids want colorful unicorn food and green smoothies and now we have created the Avatar movie inspired Na’vi blue microwave mug cake.

Secret to Na'Vi Blue Microwave Mug Cake is Blue Velvet Cake Mix | Fave Mom

It’s apparent how mainstream blue food has become because this recipe uses Blue Velvet Cake Mix.  That’s right you can get blue cake mix prepackaged at your local grocery store.  —SPOILER ALERT: this is essentially vanilla cake with a different color—And of course if you can get blue cake mix you can make a blue mug cake.  But if you prefer to use cake mixes for full cakes check out the Chocolate-Chocolate Chip Bundt Cake

Blue Mug Cake Details

This recipe consists of making a mug cake mix than creating individual mug cakes from that.  The mix is super simple and great to have on hand when you want to make another microwave mug cake.  In truth this mix can be applied to any cake mix you have, but if you have blue velvet why wouldn’t you use it?

Liquids added to the mix will make a blue microwave mug cake |FAVEMOM

Don’t be alarmed that the mix is totally white.  The magic of food coloring comes into play when you add liquid.  So just know that it will become blue.

Now I can heed those historical words of Marie Antoinette and “let them eat [blue] cake”!

Na'vi Blue Microwave Mug Cake

4 ingredients and 70 seconds in the microwave leads to blue cakey goodness and you can feel Avatar yourself

Course Dessert

Ingredients

  • 1 box Blue Velvet Cake Mix
  • 1 box Angel Food Cake Mix
  • 2 Tbsp water (per mug cake)
  • 2 Tbsp milk (per mug cake)

Instructions

  1. Mix the two cake mixes together in a large bowl.  This is your premade mix.  Don't worry that your mix is white, it's supposed to be.

  2. For one mug cake:

  3. Place 6 Tablespoons dry premade mix in a 12-16 oz coffee mug.

  4. Add 2 Tbsp water and 2 Tbsp milk (I use 2%, but you can do any milkfat level).

  5. When the liquid is added the mix suddenly becomes blue, pretty cool right?

  6. Mix in mug until the dry ingredients are incorporated fully

  7. Place mug in microwave and cook uncovered for 70 seconds.

Recipe Notes

Microwaves vary so you may need more or less time, but keep an eye on it if you add time as things like to get over heated and explode in the microwave.

L Make the World of Avatar come home with a blue Na'vi Microwave mug cake. Only 4 ingredients, takes 2 minutes total and creates a great mix you can use the next time you crave blue food.
